Australians have a proud history of leading the world in the democratic process.
Australia was the first nation in the world to introduce the secret ballot. In 1856, Victoria and South Australia were the first states to introduce secrecy of the ballot, which became known as the ‘Australian ballot’.
The system spread to Europe and the United States, with Great Britain adopting secret ballots in the Ballot Act in 1872. In 1884 it was adopted for US Presidential elections.
It is a clear example of Australians leading the World in advancing the Democratic process.
In the same vein, Australians for Better Government (ABG) is dedicated to improving the way we vote, the way we select suitable candidates, how Government functions and the wording of our Constitution.
Up until this point, any reform to our system of Government has been led by politicians. Referendums are normally the brainchild of Prime Ministers, rather than a grassroots movement from the people.
Australians for Better Government believes that together, the Australian people can drive Governmental change for the better.
With the beginning of 2025, Australians for Better Government was launched to provide a platform for this reform.
Over the coming year, ABG plans to spark debate by hosting forums, lobbying politicians and spreading our message through the media.
Ultimately, ABG has the ambition of hosting a People’s Constitutional Convention.

Elected Members of Parliament often serve their own ambitions, or the will of their political party, rather than faithfully representing the interests and concerns of their constituents.
